PRP Stem Cell Therapy

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, effective and all natural way to heal damaged joints and soft tissue in order to alleviate chronic pain. PRP consists of a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and then injected into the injured area.

PRP has been used for more than 20 years in numerous surgical fields to enhance bone grafting, accelerate wound healing and reduce the risk of infection after surgery. Medical research and intensive studies are leading the way to the tremendous benefits offered by PRP for joint pain, soft tissue injuries, low back disc degeneration, and arthritis, with the goal of enhancing the body’s ability to naturally heal itself.

What Conditions are Helped with PRP?
Common Orthopedic Conditions Helped with PRP Include Conditions Involving:

  • Shoulder Disorders (Arthritis, Bursitis and Rotator Cuff Repairs)
  • Low back pain
  • Tendonitis such as Tennis Elbow
  • Pelvic pain and instability
  • Achilles tendon problems
  • Back and neck injuries
  • Heel spur syndrome
  • Ankle sprains
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
  • Tendonitis
  • Hip arthritis
  • Ligament sprains

In addition to the Orthopedic conditions, there are many other ways to utilize PRP Stem Cell Therapy. PRP can be used for Sexual Dysfunction, Hair Loss, and Facial Rejuvenation as well. PRP can be used as a natural alternative to Facial Fillers and can be combines with Microneedling for Facial Rejuvenation. At Regenezone, we offer options for the Orthopedic conditions as well as the others in office.

PRP Stem Cell Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ

Bone and soft tissue heal from injury or damage in many different stages. By using a concentrated solution of your body’s own blood products to stimulate inflammation and cell proliferation, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy can help accelerate the initial healing stage or even reactivate it in old injuries, allowing your body to resume the healing process naturally. PRP Stem Cell Therapy speeds up the restoration and repair of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints to improve function and strength and reduce pain, making it ideal for scenarios where the joint or tissue has degenerated, arthritis has set in, or previous unhealed damage is causing chronic pain.

Dr. Jordan Kopcio of Regenezone has more than 10 years of experience using regenerative medicine like PRP Stem Cell Therapy to help patients live healthier, happier lives free from chronic pain. For him, PRP isn’t a trendy new option; it’s a proven modality for restoring function and mobility for patients of all ages, at all stages of life, and at all levels of activity. PRP Stem Cell Therapy is just one of the regenerative injection therapies available at Regenezone, where we take a comprehensive, whole-patient approach to helping pain and dysfunction so you can move better, feel better, and live better.

The Power of Platelets and Plasma in Regenerative Medicine

PRP is essentially a concentrated source of growth and cellular signaling factors needed for proper healing, containing between 5 and 10 times the number of platelets of regular blood. Platelets and plasma contain myriad factors critical for the cell recruitment, multiplication, and specialization your body needs for proper healing.

Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood, contributing to more than 50% of your blood’s total volume and providing a vehicle for all of its components to circulate through your body. Plasma is composed of water, proteins, electrolytes, and other molecular compounds like carbohydrates, fatty acids, and glycoproteins that nourish cells, fight infection, and remove waste. Plasma also delivers hormones like growth factors throughout the body that act as chemical signals for a host of bodily processes.

Platelets—also called thrombocytes—are specific blood cells involved in the body’s initial healing response. Packed with proteins called growth factors that activate and accelerate healing, platelets flood injured or damaged areas of your body to stop or prevent bleeding and begin repairing damaged tissue. Platelets adhere to the site of the injury and, after activation by collagen and other components, begin to secrete signals that trigger inflammation, new tissue formation, and connective tissue repair. These signals also recruit more platelets, oxygen, and collagen to the damaged area, as well as stem cells that will then multiply, divide, and differentiate to further cellular repair and regeneration.

The PRP Procedure

The PRP procedure is a safe, outpatient procedure that can be performed right here in our offices at Regenezone. The procedure is a four-step process.

1) A sample of your blood is taken.

2) The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge where it is spun, separating the components into layers—plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

3) Dr. Kopcio combines the platelets with the plasma and adjusts the serum by adding appropriate compounds to enhance and activate the growth factors in the plasma, calibrating it to your body’s specific needs.

4) The plasma solution is reinjected back into your body in the target area, guided by ultrasound for the most precise and accurate placement.

Since PRP Stem Cell Therapy uses your own plasma and platelets, the risk of rejection is low, the rate of success is high, and any possible side effects are minimal. Moreover, the targeted and concentrated nature of PRP Stem Cell Therapy often results in faster repair, shorter recovery, and less pain for many patients, without the need for anti-inflammatories, pain medication, or opioids.

In addition to orthopedic conditions, PRP Stem Cell Therapy is also effective in helping sexual dysfunction and hair loss, as a natural alternative to facial fillers, and in combination with microneedling for facial rejuvenation.

Choosing the Right Provider for PRP Stem Cell Therapy

Because blood composition varies from person to person, PRP Stem Cell Therapy requires a precise, personalized approach. The plasma serum used for your injections needs enough platelet concentration and the correct type, quantity, and quality of activation compounds to be effective, and you need enough sessions of the therapy for your injury to adequately heal. Once prepared, the success of the injection relies heavily on your doctor’s ability to create the appropriate healing response in exactly the right area.

Dr. Kopcio and the team at Regenezone specialize in creating customized solutions to help each patient realize optimal healing results. In addition to extensive experience in diagnosing and caring for musculoskeletal conditions, Dr. Kopcio is also well-versed in the indications, contraindications, and possible side effects of various methods, ensuring your care plan is uniquely designed to fit your body and your needs with maximum safety and efficacy. And his skill and training in proper injection protocols, as well as the use of ultrasound technology, allow Dr. Kopcio to administer PRP Stem Cell Therapy accurately and with minimal discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

No matter your age, activity level or condition, no one should have to live with pain. At The Hormone Zone, we’ve used PRP to help people in all phases of life, including:

  • Youth / amateur / professional athletes
  • “Weekend warriors” and other generally active people
  • Workers injured on the job People of any age with chronic joint, tendon or ligament pain

The PRP process involves the collection of a small sample of blood, either 30 or 60ml. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other cells in the blood, such as red and white blood cells. The concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) can now be collected and is then injected into and around the point of injury, jump-starting and significantly strengthening the body’s natural healing signal. Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a very low risk of allergic reaction.

An initial consult and exam is performed to ensure you are a candidate for PRP therapy. The procedure takes approximately one to two hours and is performed safely in our office without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia, or hospital stays. In fact, most people return to their jobs or usual activities right after the procedure. A post care sheet with activities you can and cannot do will be provided.

Because the goal of PRP Stem Cell Therapy is to resolve pain through healing, it could prove to have lasting results. Initial improvement may be seen within a few days to weeks, gradually increasing as the healing progresses. Research studies and clinical practice have shown PRP Stem Cell Therapy to be very effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal lives. Both ultrasound and MRI studies have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP Stem Cell Therapy, confirming the benefits of this healing process. The need for surgery can also be greatly reduced by helping injured tissues before the damage progresses and the condition is irreversible.

Some patients report swelling and stiffness or mild to moderate discomfort lasting a few hours after the injection. This is a normal response and is a sign that the care is working. Over time, the affected medication should be avoided for the first 72 hours, but Tylenol may be used for any discomfort. Additionally, homeopathic preparations such as Arnica may be used as well to decrease any discomfort or bruising that may occur.

Regenerative medicine is not a “quick fix” and is designed to promote long-term healing of the injured tissue. While most patients require only 1-3 injections, the regeneration of collagen takes 4-6 months and may require multiple injections. Pain and functional recovery will be assessed 3-4 weeks after the injection to determine further therapy needs. The total number of visits you will need depends on your age, the area being helped and the amount of pain you were experiencing before starting therapy.

No, not all therapies from every doctor are the same. There are different techniques and different separating equipment used. To get the maximum benefit from care, the PRP must be properly handled and injected in a precise manner.

The kits used at The Hormone Zone are always brand new, sterile, and disposable. We only use top of the line kits and never use unapproved test tubes.

While PRP has helped thousands of patients over the years, it is still relatively new and as a result is not yet covered by many insurance plans. However, some parts of the care may be covered. Since the cost for and types of care required varies significantly from patient to patient, we will provide you with pricing info during your initial consultation, based on your specific needs and situation. We will also provide you with a superbill and all coding for you to submit the claim and try for reimbursement on your own. HSA cards and flex spending accounts can also be used to pay for the care.
